The SAFMH Biennial Conference
was held on October 2010
THEME: “We can make a difference”-
From non recognition to entrepreneurship
Background:
The SA Federation for Mental Health has made
it a policy that every after second year a Biennial Conference
has to be held. The conference aimed at addressing financial independence
for persons with mental disability.
The organization is aspiring for social justice
for all and financial independence is one of the aspects that
social justice addresses. One of the barriers that persons with
mental disability face is discrimination as a result of stigma
and myths which make it difficult to integrate into the society,
employment and schools. Persons with mental disability live on
Disability Grant which is sometimes seen as a poverty trap.
This conference addressed issues that are beginning
to confront economic empowerment for persons with mental disability
in order to take them out of the poverty trap. Justice shall have
prevailed if persons with mental disability are given equal opportunities
to better themselves financially so as to get out of the poverty
trap.
Outcome of the conference:
The conference has succeeded in introspecting
ourselves what we mean by Social integration. How far do we take
social integration, does social integration mean to live together
and take care of persons with mental disability not viewing them
as our equals with diverse abilities? What came out from the presentations
was a task team to look into the Transformation of Protective
Workshops. Looking at empowering and facilitating entrepreneurship
of persons with mental disabilities there are organization in
the movement who have projects that aiming at empowering persons
with mental disabilities to raise to that level. This entails
working in partnership with other organization in empowering persons
to the level of entrepreneurship. This will give them direction
to financial independence and lift them out of the poverty trap.
We would like to thank everyone who joined us for the
conference, and hope that we will see you at our future conferences!
