The Social Integration programme
assists with the integration of persons with intellectual or psychiatric
disability into society.
Due to myths, stigmatisation, poverty and lack
of support systems, society is hesitant accepting persons with
intellectual or psychiatric disability.
Supported Employment is the single most
important vehicle for the empowerment of persons with intellectual
or psychiatric disability. Despite the advent of progressive legislation
such as Employment Equity and the Code of Good Conduct, persons
with disabilities are still finding it difficult to enter into
full time employment in the open labour market. The problem is
more pronounced amongst persons with intellectual or psychiatric
disability. This is attributed to the lack of understanding of
these disabilities, hence the apprehension when these persons
are presented for employment.
The National Office runs sensitisation workshops
for employers to be able to employ persons with intellectual or
psychiatric disability. |
